How to make a concert sign people can actually read
Most signs held up at concerts cannot be read from the stage. They are too wordy, the letters are too small, and the colours are chosen to look nice up close rather than to carry across a dark room.
Legibility at distance is not a matter of taste. It follows a few rules that sign makers have used for a century, and once you know them you can work out in advance whether your sign will be readable from where you are standing.

The one number that matters: character height
The rule of thumb used in signage is roughly 2.5 cm of capital letter height for every 10 metres of viewing distance for comfortable reading, and about half that for a message someone can make out if they are looking directly at it.
That gives you a quick sanity check. A phone screen held in landscape gives you maybe 7 cm of usable character height if the text fills the screen. Comfortably, that is readable from around 25 to 30 metres. Straining, in good conditions, with someone actively looking at you, further.
Two things follow immediately:
Fewer words means bigger letters, and letter size is the whole game. “TAYLOR” at full screen height beats “WE LOVE YOU TAYLOR COME TO BRISBANE” at a quarter of the height, every time, at every distance.
Know your actual distance. From the barrier you are perhaps 5 to 10 metres from a performer. That is easy. From the middle of a standing floor you might be 40 metres away, and no phone screen will carry that — but the people around you and the camera operators will read it, and that is often the real audience.
Contrast beats brightness
The instinct is to make the sign as bright and colourful as possible. In a dark venue, that is backwards.
What the eye resolves is the edge between the character and its background, and that edge is strongest when the two differ most in lightness — not in hue. White or yellow on black is close to the maximum available. Red on black is strong. Red on blue is nearly unreadable at distance even though both colours are vivid, because they are similar in lightness and the eye has nothing to lock onto.
A practical ordering for a dark room, best first:
- White on black
- Yellow on black
- Cyan or bright green on black
- Red on black
- Anything on a mid-tone background
Avoid putting a photo behind your text if you want it read. A busy background destroys the edge that makes characters legible. Keep photo backgrounds for signs meant to be seen close up or photographed.
Scrolling speed and reading speed
A scrolling message adds a constraint a static sign does not have: the reader has to catch the whole thing before it leaves the screen.
If someone glances at your sign for two seconds and the message takes six seconds to pass, they read a third of it and look away. The practical fixes are the same two as always — make the message shorter, or slow the scroll down so more of it is on screen at once.
For a short message, consider not scrolling at all. Static text at full height is more readable than the same text in motion, and scrolling only earns its place when the message genuinely does not fit.
Blinking is a trade, not a free win
Blinking text is much better at catching attention in peripheral vision, which is exactly what you need in a crowd of thousands. It is also harder to read, because half the time there is nothing there.
The usual compromise is to blink the background rather than the text, or to blink slowly — roughly once a second rather than several times. Fast blinking reads as a flashing light, which gets noticed and does not get read.
If the venue is dark, the phone’s torch flashing in time with the banner adds a large amount of reach. It turns a screen-sized sign into a point of light visible from much further away, at the cost of battery and of annoying whoever is standing directly next to you.
Practical things that ruin signs
- Battery. Full brightness plus a blinking torch drains a phone fast. If you want the sign during the encore, do not run it during the support act. A power bank in a pocket is the honest answer.
- Auto-lock. Nothing looks worse than a sign that goes black mid-song. Any app doing this properly keeps the screen awake, but check before you rely on it.
- Auto-brightness. In a dark room your phone will dim itself. Turn auto-brightness off and set it manually to maximum.
- Venue rules. Many arenas restrict the size of physical signs, or ban them from certain sections because they block sightlines. Phones are almost never restricted, which is a real practical advantage over cardboard — but a phone held above your head still blocks the view of the person behind you.
- Orientation. Landscape gives you far more character width. Portrait is for one short word.
Where a phone beats cardboard, and where it does not
A phone wins on: changing the message between songs, being legible in the dark without external light, taking up no space in a bag, and getting through a bag check without a discussion.
Cardboard wins on: size — a properly made A1 sign has several times the character height of a phone — and on lasting three hours without a battery.
For most people at most shows, the deciding factor is that they did not make a cardboard sign and they do have a phone.
